Mercator's Projection of the World

Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827-1884) was one of the major American atlas publishers during the second half of the nineteenth century. His milestone work was the New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World which was first issued in 1860 and continued to be published for the next thirty years.

This image titled, “Johnson's Map of the World on Mercator's Projection” was taken from the  Johnson & Ward's edition of the New Illustrated Family Atlas, published at the height of the Civil War, in 1862. It was printed from lithographic stones and has original hand coloring.

Greenland is shown as an island, the Arctic has little information, and Alaska is identified as “Russian Territory” Most of present-day Canada is titled “British Territory” and the proposed Transcontinental Railroad connects New York City to San Francisco. On all continents, political boundaries as well as major cities and important topography are shown Important ship routes are marked and the tracts of Captain James Cook’s voyage to the South Pacific in the 1770’s and Captain Charles. Wilkes’ expedition of 1839-42 are noted.

The attention to detail and fine hand coloring make this one of the more attractive maps from the 19th century. It is guaranteed to be authentic and over one hundred and forty years old
