Constellations of the Southern Sky A hand-colored engraved celestial chart, published in 1850 as part of Elijah Burritt's "The Geography of the Heavens". Showing the sky and constellations of the southern polar sky; extending from approximately 45° North declination with details the constellations. Burritt's "Atlas" was intended to help lay people and students recognize the constellations by depicting them as figures derived from Greek and Roman mythology. The publication of these engravings reflected the combined interest in science, art and classical thought of the early Federal Republic in America and exemplify the interest in the popular astronomy books that emerged in the 1830's |
